How You Can Help

Volunteers
The North Shore INN can always use volunteers. In addition to those who cook and serve meals, volunteers are needed to pick up and sort donated food or act as advocates who link our guests to community services. Because so many of our guests are Spanish speaking, bilingual volunteers are especially welcome. Volunteers with skills in writing, finances, or computers are also needed. If you want more information or would like to volunteer, contact Janet Rosenberg, Jrcelebrity@msn.com.

In-kind donations
Those who wish to make in-kind donations can bring non-perishable food to the soup kitchen on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Many individuals, schools, and religious organizations, and businesses contribute in this way. Among our very generous donors are Notre Dame in New Hyde Park, Tifareth Israel, North Country Reform Temple, Fairway, and King Kullen supermarkets, The Swan Club, The Metropolitan, Ben's Deli, The Greenvale Townhouse, and Loafers and Diane's Bakeries. This list is by no means complete and we hope in the near future to acknowledge all of our in-kind donors.

Gently used clothing can also be brought on Tuesday between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Because of space limitations, no toys or household goods can be accepted.

Funding
Each of the soup kitchens within the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) is responsible for raising their own funds to support themselves. The North Shore INN receives many donations, large and small, from individuals, schools, community groups, and businesses. Some contributions come in response to appeals in our periodic newsletter, some come unsolicited, and some anonymously. Religious organizations such as St. John's of Lattingtown and the Unitarian Universalists of Shelter Rock have been particularly generous. Foundations that have offered us valuable support include the Franklin Philanthropic Foundation and the Manhasset Community Care, Inc. and the Greentree Foundation. With technical assistance from the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), we have been able to apply for and receive grants from The Emergency Food Shelter Program (EFSP). In the near future we hope to be able to credit more of our generous donors on our web site.
